seventh

4th November 2015

IMG_4035Wow! Seven months already?!  Hard to believe but easy to see now that you sit up like a big boy all the time.  You love being able to sit and play with all your toys and see everything going on, but you cry immediately when we are out of your sight. I think your favorite place to sit up is in the bathtub.  You chew on all the bath toys, splash, and suck the water out of the wash rag. MY favorite places for you to sit up are in the grocery cart and the restaurant high chairs. Yay!!  At the end of this month you started to push up on all fours and rock back and forth. Crazy that you will be crawling soon and I’m so excited to see where YOU want to go!
IMG_3993IMG_4654This month you tried puffs and like them a lot.  It’s great practice for you to learn how to work those fingers and hands and hilarious that we find puffs just about everywhere now.  You still LOVE fruits and spit out vegetables so now for dinner you have the ‘2nd Foods’ like apples and chicken, or pear zucchini corn. You finally got the hang of your sippy cup but you need us to hold it up for you.  You always look surprised when you actually get water out! No teeth yet but still drooling and chewing all day every day.

IMG_3937

IMG_4061You are talking so much in your own little baby way.  You say “hi,” “mmmammma,” “dada,” “mada,” (Madeleine) and I swear you said “Nana” the other day for banana. You also love to blow bubble gum these days which is hilarious to us.

IMG_4567

IMG_4549We took you to your first Baylor football game this month and you loved it!  You were so nosy that you hardly slept during the game.  Another big event this month was Halloween.  You dressed up as Mickey and Madeleine was Minnie.  You were such a trick or treating trooper in the wagon just looking around and taking everything in.  Thanks for sharing your candy with us!

IMG_3974IMG_2077You weigh 14lb 15oz and are 26.5 inches long.  You wear size 2 diapers and are just starting to wear 6-12 months only because it’s getting cold outside.  Your hair is getting a little thicker too!  Happy seventh month JoeJoe!

little girl closet

14th October 2015

IMG_9405Madeleine has upgraded to her big girl room and inherited a big girl closet along with it.  Essentially it’s the same size as the nursery closet but has a different layout and, therefore, a different organization plan.

I am excited because her new closet has 4 rods but honestly, she is growing so fast that I am packing up small sizes before even using all the rod space.  This gave me the idea to remove one of the rods and add a shelf to store shoes, toys, etc.  The desk we had in this room before comes apart into a short and tall shelf unit and wouldn’t you know that the short unit fits perfectly inside the closet nook?  Holla!!

The unit has 4 shelves; the top two I used for shoe storage and the bottom two I used for toy bins and accessories. Joe cut another shelf to put right above the rod because the track was already there so now we have 3 shoe shelves, not pictured. (This has happened in several of our closets so check yours to see if your rod has the track and you can easily add storage space with a plywood shelf) I bought these adorable linen bins from target and I can fit three on each shelf.  The contents of each bin are:

  • -Bloomers and tights
  • -Headbands
  • -Hats and beanies
  • -Toys take up two bottom bins; I love having her toys on the bottom shelf so she can get them out on her own, and on a good day, put them away on her own.
  • -Attic (This is where I temporarily put items that she has grown out of.  Once the bin is full I put them in the attic where I am saving all her stuff in case we have another little girl someday.)

Right now her clothes are divided by season, which in Texas is summer and winter.  I hang up all long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and winter dresses (winter) and hang all tank tops, short sleeved shirts, summer dresses, and rompers (summer).  I fold shorts, skirts, pants, and leggings and store them in the bottom drawer of her dresser.

For the top shelves in closets I like to purchase linen bins that I can easily pull down for those hard to reach high places instead of playing a balancing act.  In these bins I store luggage, memory boxes, and very seasonal things such as ski pants and boots.  On the shelf in between rods I have another linen bin that holds diapers and wipes so they are easy to grab and restock.

M’s big girl closet is perfect for this season of life. Her stuff is put away but it’s still easy to play!

6th October 2015

IMG_4262Joseph this month you have been eating all kinds of stuff!  Rice cereal, oatmeal, teething wafers, baby food, bananas, wash rags and your own feet. You are such a stinker and dislike veggies so we have to trick you by dipping the spoon in fruits too or else you will spit it everywhere. Speaking of spitting, you have learned how and do it often.

IMG_4480

IMG_4467 IMG_4402

You are getting pretty vocal and say sounds like “mmm” and “gaga.” I’m pretty sure you say “mama” in your own way and I swear you said “hi” to me one morning.  We have a theory this will be your first word because M and I say hello and hi to you ALL the time.IMG_4335 IMG_4305

We have been practicing sitting up these days and you love this new position because you can see everything and grab at your toys.  Sitting up is also fun in the bath and pool because you get to splash around. We even tried swinging a few times this month and you always get a huge smile on your face when we push you a little higher. When you do lay down on the floor you roll immediately onto your tummy making diaper changes more of a wrestling match.

IMG_3719

IMG_3636IMG_3812

Some fun events from this month were the church festival, county fair, football games (loved), and volleyball games (too loud).IMG_4210
IMG_4289

We have not had your 6 month check up yet but we had a visit to the doctor due to pink eye and a cold.  You weighed 14lb 4oz and were 26 inches long.  You are still in size 2 diapers and 3-6 month clothing.  Your hair is coming in blonde and your BIG eyes are bright blue.IMG_3696 IMG_3662 IMG_3656

I cannot believe it has been half a year since you were born.  Happy six months baby joe joe.

#itspawelektime

5th October 2015

My brother-in-law, David and his new bride Tarah got married in Colorado in August and the whole family got to be there. Colorado is where Tarah grew up and where David went to college AND the place where they met so it was very special to make it the place where they became husband and wife.

We had so much fun celebrating their marriage, playing in the hotel room, exploring the park and enjoying the beautiful CO summer.  Joseph enjoyed his first airplane experience and now Madeleine thinks all planes are flying to Colorado.  Madeleine was a great flower girl with her cousins and successfully distributed ALL her flowers at the start of the aisle while yelling “WEEEE!” Way to go girl!

Trip highlights include: checking 40 bags of luggage, tequila shots with the bachelorette, Joseph’s first plane ride, ring around the rosy, and the hotel breakfast.  Since we have been home M pretends to dress up like a “beautiful bride” and we dance just like we did at the wedding.  Here are some pictures from our trip and welcome to the family Tarah! #itspawelektime

Medicine Cabinet Organization

IMG_3240Y’all this is my first organizing project since Joseph came along and it felt so good to start and finish this project…even if it was a small one.  It all started when I was trying to put my vitamins back in the cabinet and every time I made room something else fell out. #crowded

IMG_1398

BEFORE

IMG_1401

BEFORE

I took everything out of both medicine cabinets, our and the kids’, and tossed everything that was expired.  I was SO surprised at how much medicine we threw out.  No joke there were some from 2012…yikes! I realized that we had a lot more in our cabinet than the kids so I transferred all our thermometers, Pepto, and throat spray over to the kids bathroom to make room.  We don’t use these things on a regular basis so I’m sure we won’t miss them on our side.

The remaining items I separated into categories like allergy, cold and flu, pain relief, etc.  I took a picture of everything layed out on the counter so that I could reference back when I was shopping for containers.  This was very helpful to know what quantity and sizes to plan for. The Container Store has caddies and containers specifically for medicine and then their selection of small boxes is great too.

AFTER

IMG_3259

Since everything was out of the cabinets I decided to add some “wall paper” using the same wrapping paper I installed as drawer liners.  This is how I did it here and here.

IMG_3261

AFTER

IMG_3264Putting everything back in was a little like playing Tetris (remember that game?) and the caddy allows for easy reaching and maximizing the vertical space. I used tall acrylic boxes for storing bandaids (kids and adult) and thermometers.  The small cubbies hold items like chapstick and droppers while bigger bottles can stand alone.

two year old you

16th September 2015

IMG_1729

Madeleine is two years old now and full of personality.  She definitely has a mind of her own and shows her independence most when it’s time to pick out her clothes in the morning when she says “let’s get ready for the day!” She is VERY into dresses and loves to wear her white patent leather shoes with everything.  Her favorite activities are coloring (chalk, markers, colored pencils, crayons), going on walks (she says, “bye see ya later”), play doh (we make pretend cookies), dress up (she pretends to be a beautiful bride), and dancing (we have the BEST dance parties to “the shake song” and M’s dance moves are A-mazing). She is my best buddy. The sweetest times are at night when we read stories and cuddle with prayers and then in the morning when we have coffee and milk in bed, she always request Peekaboo Barn.  This girl likes to go go go and often asks to go to the park, to Chick fil A, or “Karget.” She told me the other day she needed to go to HEB and I asked what she needed and she said, “groceries”, I asked what kind of groceries and she replied,”turkey and cheese.” Madeleine also likes to play with Joseph, and this means play while Joseph watches her.  She still has a hard time letting Joseph have toys but she loves to make him laugh by getting close to his face and making silly sounds and faces. Sometimes she asks to hold his hand and just sits beside him for a bit. Since J came along, M likes to pretend with her babies too and sometimes I see her on the monitor shushing and bouncing her “butterfly blanket” like a little baby when she is supposed to be napping.

I could go on and on with stories but the bottom line is we love this little girl and everything about her two year old self.  My sister-in-law had the great idea of interviewing our kids on each birthday and asking them about their likes and such.  Below are Madeleine’s answers and then a little input from me as well…

IMG_1745

What is your favorite meal? “pasta” “quesadilla” (her fave is rice and beans)

What is your favorite color? “orange”

What is your favorite toy? “the frog ribbit ribbit” (This is Joseph’s favorite toy)

What is your favorite song? “The shake song” (Taylor Swift-Shake it Off)

Who is your best friend? “Joe Joe”

Who do you love? “Mama…. and Daddy”

Who is your favorite princess? “Eby” (her cousin Evelyn)

What is your favorite snack? “Teddy Grahams” (Its actually fruit snacks and colored goldfish)

What is your favorite book? “Go Dog Go”

What do you want to be when you grow up? “Two”

What is your favorite breakfast? “I like bagel”

What is your favorite sport? “run”

What’s your favorite drink? “Sonic”

….and a little throw back to Madeleine when she turned one.  Can you believe how much they change so fast??

room for reading

10th September 2015

I recently posted about our favorite books we are reading these days and thought it would be a good idea to talk about organizing them.  It really is amazing how many books you can accumulate as an adult throughout school, work, and leisurely reading, but then add children’s books to the mix and you begin to worry your house will start sinking under the weight!

A kindle or nook is a great space saver and totally convenient, but we prefer to have the actual pages in our hands and there is some satisfaction putting a finished book on the shelf.  Am I right?

IMG_1774

We installed two floor to ceiling book shelves in our study a couple of years ago and this is where we keep about 60% of our reading materials.  The nursery bookshelf holds about 20%, including all my ‘mom’ books, and the remaining 20% can be found throughout the house as decoration. A stack of books on an end table or under a picture frame can really be beautiful decoration in your home and serves as double duty; staging and storing.

I have reading ‘stations’ set up throughout our house (in a basket in the living room, on the shelf above her bed, etc) so Madeleine and I can read in several rooms throughout the day.  The bottom shelves of the bookcases in the study are dedicated to her books and activities so they are within reach and inviting.  Making reading convenient for her has made it happen more often.

I’ve found that we have a lot of seasonal books for holidays, especially Christmas and Easter.  I have started to pack them up with that season’s decor which gains some space on our shelves and serves as a bonus when we pull them out the next year.  It’s like opening a present or getting new books at the store or library:)

Speaking of library, checking out books from your local library is a great way to introduce new stories for free and then take them back when you are ready, no extra shelf space needed.  Some libraries have great toddler story times too so make a day of it!  The Bulverde/Spring Branch library has toddler story time Mondays at 10:30 AM and they have a room just for kids with puzzles and activities.

Books last forever but you don’t have to keep them that long. Every now and then we’ll loan one out or I’ll see one I don’t think we need and we will donate it.  I truly believe in 15 minute purging sessions!

Have a cool way that you store or organize books in your home?  Let me know at letsgitorgainzed@gmail.com

IMG_3370

Joseph you are five months old now!  How is this possible and how is the year almost over??  Time is flying but one thing is for sure, we are having lots of fun!  You have gotten very comfortable with your hands and we play with your toys now.  Your favorite is the crinkly book that makes lots of noise. You cry immediately when you drop it but stop as soon as its in your hands again!  You are exploring everything we give you by holding it and then tasting it:)

IMG_3953

IMG_1614

You also got your first taste of rice cereal this month.  I was so excited to start feeding you and you got the hang of it real quick, helping me with the spoon and making a mess are your new talents. Next up, oatmeal and pears…. Hopefully this will help your tummy and spit up situation which is still full force and quite embarrassing when we are in public. We all smell lovely these days:) You also like to eat our fingers and your toes, maybe some teeth are on their way soon?

IMG_3507

IMG_3513

You have really fallen in love with your sister and you are so content watching her play.  She loves to make you laugh so she will make silly faces and sounds to you and you quickly smile and coo back which makes her laugh and this game goes on and on.  Sometimes I feel left out with you two, hello Mom is still here haha! We all love to tickle you because you are just too easy.  You are ticklish everywhere it seems but the best spots are your back and  legs.

IMG_3189

IMG_3236

You are such a rolly polly this month.  You roll onto your tummy or side almost as soon as we lay you down and you prefer to sleep on your belly with you little tush in the air. adorable. During awake times we can usually find you propped up on your arms watching us or playing with your toys.

IMG_3476

Some fun events happened this month!  You took your first airplane ride to Colorado for Dave and Tarah’s wedding and we went to Schlitterbahn!

IMG_3095

IMG_3347

You had a check up this month and everything looks great and healthy.  You weigh 13lb 4oz and are 24 inches long.  You still wear size 2 diapers and 3-6 month clothes and size 1 shoes.  The doctor wants us to see a neurologist just to double check your head shape isn’t interfering with your development so we have an appointment set up for next month. You had another round of shots but you were so brave and cried just a little before you were back to flirting with the nurse. Happy five months sweet boy!

woohoo! madeleine is two

IMG_1340

We celebrated Madeleine’s second birthday the last weekend in August with a party at the park.  The “green park” as she calls it, is one of her favorite places. We walk there every week with our friends and play on the playground afterwards and on every other day of the week she asks to go to there so it was the perfect place for her  celebration!

IMG_3407

We added in another one of her favorite things, sno cones!  The ice cream truck that comes down our street (#cityperks) gladly came to the party and made snocones for everyone!  Thanks Mr. Pete!

IMG_3408

It was a great day with great weather and one happy little girl.  She had been talking about her birthday for weeks saying enthusiastically  (almost yelling) “I’m gonna be TWO YEARS OLD. My birthday is AUGUST 31st! Sno cones are gonna be there! I’m gonna have TWO PINK CANDLES for my SECOND BIRTHDAY!”

And she did. And now she is two.

Unpinned-flower garland

1st September 2015

Pinterest is oh so fabulous and my go to for creative solutions and projects, but if we never bring our ideas to life, where does the inspiration go?  Let’s GIT UNPINNED and follow through on those boards we excitedly pinned and then forgot about!

IMG_3255

One of the ideas I pinned for Madeleine’s big girl room was this diy flower garland using a strand of Christmas lights and cupcake liners.  When we took down our Christmas decorations I set aside a strand of lights in her closet and started picking up cupcake liners in different colors, patterns, and sizes. Once I had enough I got to work.

IMG_0875

The cuts in the pin are exactly what I followed and super easy.  This was a simple task to do while playing with Madeleine and sometimes she would play with the liners just stacking and unstacking them. Do I foresee a toddler activity pin?IMG_0877

When it came time to add the cupcake liners to the light strand, I simply punched the light through the center of each liner.  Most of the flowers have 2 liners, a green on bottom and then a color on top, and some even have three.  TIP: I used a stack of mini cupcake liners in white and didn’t cut them at all.

The hardest part of this project was figuring out where and how I should hang them.  M’s room has a collage wall over her bed so I decided to incorporate the flower garland.  Not a bad night light huh?

Here’s how it looks now after some tweaking.  Madeleine thinks they are very pretty and hasn’t tried to pull them off….yet.IMG_3248
