spiritual decluttering

20th February 2015

Dusty Window

I read this reflection this morning and thought I would share it with all of you who read my blog for organizing inspiration.  This reflection stood out to me because, just like we clutter our closets, we clutter our lives and hearts with sin and things of the world.  I love the idea of looking at Lent as a “Spring Cleaning” of our hearts where we declutter and prioritize what is really important, Jesus.  You can read the reflection below or follow the link:

https://wau.org/meditations/current/

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn. (Isaiah 58:8)

A frail, elderly widow living alone was visited by her son, who had been traveling for a long time. Opening the front door, he was shocked by the disrepair her home had fallen into. Over the years she had accumulated a lot: furniture, clothing, books, toys her children had played with. Since she was no longer able to keep it all tidy, it was piled in every room in boxes and bundles. But worse than the clutter was the darkness. The windows, where he could see them, were covered in layers of dust.

So the man set to work. He organized the clutter, storing much of it in the attic. Then he cleaned the windows and aired out the house until it was once more filled with light.

Like the widow’s home, we also house two potential blockages to the light of Christ: clutter and dust. Clutter is what happens when your human treasures—material possessions, habits, hopes and dreams, old memories—take priority over the Lord. They aren’t necessarily bad things, but they need to be reorganized and put in their proper place. The dust is the sin that can build up on the windows of our hearts, keeping us in shadows and darkness.

We can consider fasting as a way of dealing with the clutter and repentance as a way to clean off the dust. By fasting, we reorder our lives so that Jesus gets top priority, and in repentance we let his light shine in us—and through us—more brightly. Fasting is like spring cleaning, as we spruce up our spiritual lives and put away some unnecessary baggage. Often, as we take up the call to fast, we get a better view of the sins that have been blocking the light in the first place.

So try to put aside a few things—time on the computer, a favorite food, a fun activity that is swallowing up too much time—so that you can focus better on window washing. Make it your goal to let in as much sunlight as possible. As you do, you’ll discover how much joy there is in choosing a simple, clutter-free life.

“Lord you are my light! Come and break forth like the dawn in my heart.”

I love when Valentine’s Day falls on a weekend because you can really make a day of it and I LOVE a day with my little family.

We exchanged a few presents in the morning and then made breakfast; Joe got me an OPI nail polish from their San Fran collection since we went there for our anniversary, I got him some tools and a cheesy card, and we got M some side walk chalk, a mermaid towel, a new coloring book, and a few other practical goodies.  We made some pink and red chocolate covered pretzels with sprinkles and M was a big help.  She went to town on the chocolate and then it hardened all over her.  :)

The rest of the day we piddled around the house, ran a few errands and then went on a date to Pei Wei.  Joe took me to Pei Wei and a movie on our first Valentine’s day 10 YEARS AGO!!!!!  We ended the date with some mint chocolate chip ice cream which M calls icing.  It was such a fun day full of love, which is what it’s all about!!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

baby babble

9th February 2015

IMG_0720M is talking so much right now and I want to remember the precious ways she says certain things.  Here are a few things we hear several times a day:

“Planes, are you?”-when she hears a plane or is outside looking for one.

“dooning”=What are you doing?IMG_0835

“sosion”=lotion which she loves to put on her hands and belly every night after her bath.

“HaHaaaaa”=Yeehawwww

When you ask her what her name is she says “Maddie” and sometimes she’ll add on “Velek”IMG_0891

“Bilk”=milk

“lub you”=Love you

“sip some,” or “see some” is when she wants what we are eating or drinking

“High pies”=High Fives, one time at church we were giving a blessing so everyone had their hands extended to the front and M insisted that she give the row behind us high fives!

“hold you”

IMG_0722“pianos”-for some reason piano is always plural

“ghetti”=spaghetti

She remembers and talks about things that scared her like the car wash and the pinata.  She will literally bring them up throughout the day and tell me all about them over and over.

When she wants to read Go Dogs Go, she says “GogogoGoGo” and “Ebber” is when she wants to read I’ll love you Forever.

Her tiny little voice is the greatest and I cannot get enough.

tax time on your mind

4th February 2015

Are you getting mail that says “Important Tax Document Enclosed?”  I am too and here are some tips on how to stay organized this tax season.

  • Designate a folder and keep it  handy for collecting tax forms that come in the mail. During a free minute, gather documents you already have and will need, such as social security numbers for dependents, and keep them in  the folder as well.  When you are ready to file, the folder of forms is ready for you!
  • Save your log in info if using an online tax service such as Turbo Tax.  We used Turbo Tax last year and they have sent me a reminder email or two about my 2014 tax return.  Take that reminder as an opportunity to make sure you have your username and password.  Saved information from previous returns is a major time saver this year!

Important tax dates to remember:

January 31st was the deadline for your employer and bank to send your important forms like your W2, 1098, or 1099. Haven’t gotten it? Make sure you have the correct address listed with your human resources department and bank so these forms are guaranteed to get to the right place.

April 15th-Duh your taxes are due!

If you keep receipts, start going through them now.  I keep a small accordion file of receipts and one of the sections is dedicated to donation receipts that I can claim on my taxes.

Happy filing!

getting closer

30th January 2015

30 weeks along now and another week closer to holding our little man!

IMG_0964

So far so good!  We are measuring on schedule for an Easter due date and my belly is growing very quickly.  I feel little kicks here and there but this guy is pretty chill compared to his sister and mostly likes to stretch.  I especially love when he gets hyper at night when I eat ice cream on the couch:)  Remind me to stop that habit after he comes! Ahh the joy of having a baby right before swim suits.

I have really enjoyed being pregnant over the winter months instead of summer.  Only a little swelling has occurred and my maternity wardrobe consists of maternity tees and sweaters, ahhh so comfy!

Cravings have included ranch dressing, chalupas, and cookies although I crave cookies even when I’m not pregnant.  These days I just get hungry for a certain restaurant and crave it until we go there.  Weird, but today it’s Popeyes red beans and rice, Haha!!

We finally picked a name and decided on Joseph Charles which is very special because 1. it’s Joe’s name and 2. it’s our grandfather’s middle names combined.  I’ve been calling him baby Joe Joe and so has Madeleine.  Can I call him that forever???  We’ll just see what he thinks when he gets here!!

We are stocking up on diapers and boy clothes, Gymboree made a killing off me last week, and getting the room ready.  Just like with Madeleine, my favorite thing to buy are shoes, and I know they are so impractical, but my oh my they are tiny, precious, and irresistible.

IMG_0963

We are in the process of getting Madeleine’s big girl room ready but not quite ready for her to actually sleep in the bed so right now the plan is this: Have the room ready and move over all of M’s clothes and nick nacks, move Joe Joe into the nursery  but keep M in the crib until the time is right.  We shall see.

The theme for M’s nursery was Famers Market and we are tweaking it just a little for J to become a Farm theme.  Think cow print crib sheet and stay tuned for a nursery post.

still doing laundry

28th January 2015

Last time I posted about our laundry room it was looking like this:

20140807_170930

Which is a giant step up from this:

IMG_6589

Well now it looks likes this!

IMG_8736

IMG_8741

Tasks still remaining on our Laundry To Do List included:

  • Touch up the trim and door paint
  • Make a countertop and stain the shelf to match
  • Purchase a frame or washboard to cover up the ugly connection box
  • Stage and Decorate??

Joe made the countertop out of cabinet grade ply wood from Lowe’s that he cut to size and stained with our ‘go to’ Jacobean color.  I was pretty leery of using ply wood because it’s rough and I wanted a smooth finish, especially when it came time to wipe off lint or fold on the surface.  The first go round was pretty rough, pun intended, so Joe used our sander on top of the stain to smooth it out and then added a coat of clear polyurethane.  There were still a few snags here and there so one more round of sanding and poly did the trick.  It is really smooth y’all!

IMG_6909

Installation was a piece of cake.  We took a few pieces of trim board and screwed them into the studs on each side wall.  We made the outside cut at an angle so you can’t see it when you look head on.  The counter top, once we got it in the door and under the cabinets, just slides right on top.

**It’s important to note that the counter doesn’t go all the way to the back wall because the washer and dryer connections are in the way.  We also didn’t want to secure the counter with silicone or caulking in case we have to remove it to access the connections.  There are tons of solutions for working around the hoses but this one seemed to work best for us.

Since the connections come above the counter I wanted to cover them up tastefully so I had the idea to use an old washer board.  I found this one at Crate and Barrel for only $20 and it is the perfect disgu’size.’ :)

IMG_8735

IMG_8740

Joe also stained the middle shelf to match the counter and please check out my giant value size detergent.  I am still on my first one and am not missing buying the small detergents every other grocery trip.

Here’s a peek inside the upper cabinets.  There is still tons of room for storage but I love everything neat and tidy, much better than the pedestals.

IMG_8744IMG_8747IMG_8749 5.24.33 PM

Still left to do:

  • Touch up trim and door paint
  • And I’m on the hunt for a cute laundry room print, something like this

helper

23rd January 2015

Dishes, laundry, raking, pushing, you name it…M is such a big helper! My everyday chores are whole lot more fun when she’s around.  Sometimes it may take us twice as long but you just can’t resist a “help you.” Thanks for being my right hand man Madeleine:)

painted peg board

21st January 2015

One of the mini projects within the big honker garage project was to paint our peg board.  From a practical sense, this WAS just for fun and Joe needed some convincing that it was worth it but I think it turned out GREAT!  Is it me or do the thick stripes actually make it look less cluttered?? We used a sample of flat black paint and the stripes were very easy to create using the peg holes as a guide for the painter’s tape.

kicking off the new year

15th January 2015

We rang in the new year with a road trip to Dallas to visit our friends and watch the Baylor Bears in the Cotton Bowl.  We hadn’t been to Dallas since our baby shower, and this time we had her with us!  We chatted and caught up, ate some pizza, and ring in the new year with a champagne toast just us 3.

It was an early day game, the Cotton Bowl should really rethink this after New Years Eve, but we made it to the stadium with diapers in our pockets, no diaper nags allowed, and had a blast watching a great game.

IMG_0723

We were nervous about a 5 hour drive with Madeleine but she did awesome and we read Go Dog Go, a lot.

passwords protected

13th January 2015

mSecure-Password-Manager-App

We all have passwords, especially in this digital day and age, and I am truly amazed at the number of combinations I can memorize.  There are times however when I forget, especially when my ‘go to’ password doesn’t meet the security factors of a site and I have to come up with something I’ll forget in five minutes.  You know what I’m talking about.

My typical solution for remembering the 15 or so passwords I use on the regular was to write them out in my planner on one of the back note pages.  This is completely unsafe and insecure and although no one will want my rapid rewards number, they might find some interest in my Etsy account or blog log in. Better safe than sorry!

This year as I transition to my new agenda, I will not transfer those back pages.  Instead, I purchased an app and now have my information securely stored on my phone.  I did some research as there are several password keeper apps to choose from.  Some of them are free but limit you to the number of passwords you can store and others charge you an annual fee.  I decided to go with mSecure which costs $9.99 and is the only fee I will get.

msecure1

So far I really like it.  You start off by generating the password of all passwords. Seriously, the longest one I have ever had, but it makes sense if it’s keeping all my other passwords safe, it must need to be grand.  You are allowed one little hint but there are no ‘forgot your password’ prompts with this app.  Once it’s lost, it’s lost, and you have to start over.

Foreman_11670136_2848_com.mseven.msecure0.png

Once you get started, the app organizes your information into items such as bank account, web log ins, frequent flyer, combinations, etc and each one has a different icon.  You can also create customized groups which I find really helpful.  For example, I have several web log ins for bills like CPS and SAWS and Time Warner, so I created a “Bills” group to house all of them.  Now when I need to access my account, my info is there and safe.

How do you save your passwords? If you already have a solution, share it!  If not, try this one with me and decrease the password post its.
